What are digital infrared thermometers?

Measurement of temperatures of certain surfaces is difficult with ordinary thermometers. This is where infrared thermometers step in. These thermometers can tell the temperature of any surface without even coming into contact with it. This is the reason why they are also known as non-contact thermometers. These thermometers are pretty accurate and very quick. They are really easy to use as well. To measure the temperature of a surface, all you need to do is trigger an infrared laser beam from your thermometer device onto any spot of the surface. When you have concentrated the beam onto the surface for a few seconds, you would get a reading on the LED display of the thermometer. According to your settings, the reading can be either one according to the Kelvin scale or the Celsius scale.

How does a digital infrared thermometer look like?

These thermometers have a small plastic body, with one or two lenses at the front. They look like small pocket flashlights shaped like guns. As mentioned above, they also have a small LED screen on which the temperature readings are digitally displayed.

In which industries are infrared digital thermometers used?

These thermometers find application in a number of different industries. Some areas where these thermometers find extensive usage are: detection of clouds, finding the temperature of an oven, checking hot spots on various areas, monitoring temperature of products during manufacturing, etc.

Can infrared digital thermometers measure temperatures of all kinds of surfaces?

No. There are certain instances where these thermometers either completely fail to work or provide inaccurate and unreliable readings. Some examples of such instances are when the surface is not stationary, when the surface is located in vacuum, when the surface is surrounded by a strong electromagnetic field, etc. In any circumstances where the laser beam cannot be concentrated for a few seconds on the surface, infrared thermometers fail to work.

Infrared thermometers also tend to work inaccurately with shiny surfaces. However, it is not impossible to use them to take readings of such surfaces. All you have to do is coat the surface in such a way that it is not too shiny and then use the thermometer.

There is yet another instance when infrared thermometers might provide wrong readings. Infrared thermometers take time to get acclimatized with the surrounding temperature in case there is a drastic change in the same. For example, if you have kept the thermometer in a freezing temperature and then you take it to a sauna room to measure the temperature of an object, then there is a possibility that you might get a wrong reading. Therefore, in order to get reliable readings, it is important that you give time to these infrared devices to get used to the surrounding temperature.

How much do infrared digital thermometer cost?

Depending on the temperature range, the thermometer is capable of measuring as well as the brand; its price range can be anything between $20 and $35. However, shopping online might get you better deals; you might even find a thermometer at a price as less as $15.
