One of the most difficult situations for people suffering from diabetes is to control the sugar level. To keep the disease under control it is essential to maintain steady blood sugar levels. However, when the level of sugar increases it makes the person feel lousy. If this condition is repeated too often, it could be an unhealthy condition. The blood glucose is nothing but the amount of glucose in blood, which comes from different kinds of foods consumed. The excess amount of glucose is also stored in the body, which is the main source of energy for the body cells. It is carried to various parts of the body and cells through the blood stream.

High blood sugar level is also known as Hyperglycemia. This condition occurs when the body is not able to produce insulin or respond properly to insulin. The body requires insulin to enable the glucose to enter the cells, which are used for energy requirements. In people who are suffering from diabetes, the glucose accumulates in the blood and results in hyperglycemia. When this condition exists for long periods, it can result in serious health problems if it is not treated on time. The level of blood sugar is considered to be high when it is above the target range. This will usually be notified to the patient by the medical team.

Hyperglycemia can cause serious damage to the blood vessels, which carry blood to the important organs. This can even result in increased risk of stroke and heart disease, vision problems, kidney disease and nerve problems in people suffering from diabetes. Such problems do not usually show up in children and teenagers who suffered from the disease for a short period. Such health issues usually occur in adults with diabetes especially, if they have not been able to control the disease.

There are several reasons for the high levels of blood sugar. The patient will need to balance three aspects, which include the medicines used like pills or insulin, the foods eaten and the amount of exercise. All these have to be balanced well to keep the level of sugar under control. If one of these goes off, it can affect the sugar level. Hyperglycemia is generally caused by not taking the medicines properly, not following the food plans, not exercising properly, having other aliments like flu, stress etc and taking other medicines which could affect the work of the diabetes medicines

Treating the condition can involve identifying the causes and fixing them first. Some of the common ways to manage the causes of hyperglycemia are as follows. Always make it a point to consume all medications on time and eat meals regularly. Drinking of caffeine-free liquids and sugar-free liquids are beneficial. Take the reading of blood sugar in every four hours until the levels are normal. Check the urine for ketones until they disappear from it. Try to follow the strategies to lower the sugar level like exercising, dieting, and medication etc. If the levels cannot be controlled, it is better to consult the doctor for immediate medical treatment.
